Catchin’ Fireflies 5k Run/WalkThe Wakefield High School community will be hosting the second 5K Run/Walk to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) on Sunday, June 2nd at 7:30 at Wakefield High School.
The cost of the race is $20 ($15 for WCPSS and college students) and includes a t-shirt, glow-stick, Lymphoma awareness bracelet, and refreshments. The course is illuminated with luminaries. Runners and walkers are encouraged to wear glow in the dark gear. There will be a prize for the most illuminated racer, as well as, prizes for the top females and males of several age brackets. Wakefield High School alumni, Aaron Wollett helped to create the race to raise funds for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on behalf of his high school Agriculture teacher, Jodi Riedel. On May 20th, 2011, Jodi Riedel’s husband, Jamie Riedel (a teacher and Lacrosse coach at Heritage High School in Wake Forest) was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. Today, Jamie Riedel is cancer free and celebrating life with his wife and son, Will (2). In addition, another Wakefield High School teacher and English department chair, Heather McDonald, was diagnosed with Lymphoma the summer of 2012. This year, the Catchin’ Fireflies race will donate funds in her honor.
WAKEFIELD: HEALING COMMUNITY GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP
Wakefield: Healing a Community Grief Support is opened to the entire surrounding area. It is a free support system sponsored by the high school and facilitated by teachers who have suffered a loss in their life. It will begin on Tuesday, March 5th from 6:30- 8:00 PM. The meetings will be held in the modular unit, classroom 1008. The mission of the group is not only to support others who have experienced a loss, but to help them rediscover,
reinvest, renew their life without their loved one. Participants will be asked to contribute to discussions as well as use the tools offered in the group to help ease the journey of grief. This will be a 12-week program with an option to continue meeting after completion. You may contact the group directly by emailing wakefieldhealingacommunity@gmail.com
